Before You Visit Your Custom Framer Checklist

sierra art services framed artAre you thinking about having an artwork custom framed?
The following are some points to consider before you ever enter the frame shop. I want my custom work to look amazing in my clients home so when a customer brings me a piece of art, we immediately embark on the following design and decision making process.

The inquiry begins with, "Where are you going to hang it?" Physically walk your artwork around your home and see where it fits. Notice it's proportions. It is always better to find an organic and natural placement than to try and shove something where it doesn't quite belong. Once you have found the best possible spot, stop and look closely at the surrounding environment.

Measure your wall space. It is important to know how large your finished custom framing can become. If you have a large wall, you can fill it nicely with generous matting and a wide chunky frame. If the space is tight, the framing can be kept small and narrow. You will want to allow for an open area around the artwork so it looks like it fits comfortably, not squished or disconnected.

What are your paint colors? If you are planning on painting or applying some other wall treatment, do that work first, or at least decide on a design plan and collect a sample of the color and texture. The goal is complimentary contrast. The framing should stand out from the background but also be in agreement with its surroundings.

Notice your upholstery, flooring and window treatments. What kind of textures and colors make the decor of the room. Do you have a favorite piece of furniture or a color scheme that you wish to compliment? Do you gravitate toward rich, deep colors, warm or cool neutral tones, or pastels? How do you feel about rustic or urban settings?

Gather samples of your decor. Every time you make a change in your home decorating such as paint, carpet, tile, or fabric, make a small sample and add it to your collection. I keep my sample bag in my car. This way, when I am out shopping and find a treasure I think will coordinate, I can check it right away.

This small bit of extra planning will be priceless. You will have a good idea of what kind of custom framing will compliment your artwork and your home. Ask to see as many samples as you would like. Just remember that design choices are often as much a process of elimination as identifying what does work. Your ideas along with your framers expertise will result in a finished product that looks fantastic and will last for many years to come.

What are your favorite decor configurations? Do you mix soft springtime colors with rough woodsy textures? Do you feel most at home in sleek and shiny modern simplicity? Has your home become a neutral zone with a touch of quiet formality, or a center of continuous and vibrant activity? Tell me all about it in the comments below....

Love your Framed Art

paintbrush yosemiteConnect with us for a Complete and Complimentary Evaluation of your Framed Art. Styles change. Art collectors upgrade and redecorate as the years go by. If you have a piece of art that is rare, expensive, or sentimental, then it is worth protecting. If an artwork doesn't look as nice as you'd like because it is showing some wear or no longer fits your decor, we can bring it up to date, get it back into shape and looking great again.

We are color & design experts and make great recommendations. A new mat or frame can completely change the look of your artwork and our selection is amazing! We carry an extensive array of hand-crafted Italian mouldings and we can repair or recreate just about anything. Our matting has won international awards. Framing can be made larger or smaller. We can re-hinge artwork and repair broken corners on frames. We can take framing apart just to clean the inside of your glass, which can become hazy and speckled with bits of insects through the years. If needed, we offer complete restoration services.

With an Art Historian and Master Picture Framer on staff, we are ready to determine exactly what type of art you have; if it is an original painting, a photo, or a print. Works of art on paper and textiles of any kind are our specialty. We will inspect the structural integrity of the frame and any preservation techniques. You will then be given a free condition report and general appraisal, including an estimate for helpful upgrades that will extend the life and beauty of the work. Ultra-violet protective glass is our most popular upgrade. This will stop fading and light damage in its tracks.

Your special bonus for visiting our showroom: with your framed art, we will inspect and likely replace the hanging system on the back with something more secure, absolutely free of charge. So, even if you decide to keep your framing the way it is for now, you will leave with lots of insight and information, and know your art can be safely hung on the wall.
